Day 6

Day 6

May 28th, 2008

Hours Worked: 3
Objective of the Day: More painting!

Today I painted. That's basically it, so not so exciting. Just a few pictures.

A cupboard after painting. Much nicer than before.

More cupboards.

The wall between the living room and bedroom is starting to go up again.

Insulation is put into the walls.

Day 5

Today I got to one of the more major parts of the renovation of the kitchen - painting. It was only a bit, but things are really moving along. We'll have floors down in the next couple of days, and the kitchen should be looking really nice soon. It won't be much longer than a week until we're done.

Enough talking, here's the exciting stuff:

The wires connecting to the light were too short to safely install a new light, so we had to take that out and make a mess.

The kitchen floor before being leveled.

Leveling out that part of the floor.

On the tops of the cabinets

We fixed it! It was a bit of work getting it on though.

The paint is going on!!!!!

A painted cabinet door - and an unpainted one.

The grey stuff is floor leveler.

Day 4

I can't remember the exact date... Last Sunday I believe.

Hours Worked: 3
Objective of the Day: General Work

Not much happened on Day 4 either. The floor had some more work done on it, and I spent a lot of time sweeping things up. It was smoking hot that day... I almost had to mow the gigantic lawn too. The lawnmower broke though. (=D)

The sunroom is filling up with stuff.

We found mold on the underside of the carpet, so we've put primer on the floor.

Some of these tiles will have to come up, and the toilet may have to be removed too.

The bathtub is a bit worse than the one in our last project.

The living room is coming along... kind of.

The main bedroom in all its glory.

I could've never guessed what was in there before we removed the cover.

I took a little time to take some pictures of the yard and outside the house that day. Here are a couple:

The dandelion-plagued yard.

Finally, a picture of the front of the house.

The yard is quite big. This is only part of it.

The apple tree produces a ton of apples.

Day 3

May 21st, 2008

Hours Worked: 3 1/2

Objective of the Day: Cleaning the kitchen.

Well, the third day I've been working at Unit Three has come and passed... and the annoying this is I forgot the camera. Oh well, nothing much exciting happened anyways.

Today I mostly cleaned stuff in the kitchen. I spent a bunch of time cleaning the fridge, getting mold off stuff, cleaning the stove, etc. There wasn't anything exciting, again, so it was one of the better days to forget the camera.

Day 2

Today, after a couple day break from working on Unit Three, I got back to it. My two brothers came along with me and my dad this time, so we got a bunch of work done.

Monday, May 19, 2008

Hours Worked: 3

Objective of the Day: More Demo Work

We got a lot done today. We pulled up flooring from all parts of the house, got the rest of the baseboards up, and got a all of the wood we've taken down out of our way. The carpet in the living room and bedrooms were completely pulled up, and the linoleum in kitchen was ripped up. After a little mishap involving the deleting and frantic restoration of files, I have pictures of the day.

The storage room has been completely taken down now.

The back bedroom with the carpet taken up.

The master bedroom.

The living room floor, before we ripped up the plywood covering it...

...and after. Strange how when you're working a lot of things tend to get worse before they get better.

The pile of stuff we tore up from the living room floor.

View of the living room from the front door. A lot different from before:

Also, this time I had time to get a picture of the exterior of Unit Three:

That's the sunroom on the back.

Day 1

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Hours Worked: 6 ½

Objective of the Day: Demo Work

Thursday was our first day of actual work on the house, and we jumped right in, our objective being to remove the walls that made up the storage room to extend the living room. There always seems to be some type of demo work with renovations, no matter how small.

I was designated nail puller for that day, pulling out all the boards that were taken down from the wall. I also removed the baseboards from everywhere in the house so we could put up new ones later.

Here are some pictures from our work that day:

This is the storage room after most of it has been taken apart.

We found this silver stuff in the outside walls near the storage room. It seems the people who build the house thought it was insulation.

From where the entrance to the storage room is.

This is the pile of some of the boards I pulled nails out of.

The most important tool for renovations of all: The life sustaining radio.

I should mention that I am am home schooled, which is why I'd be out renovating a house on a Thursday. I count these projects as shop class.

The Sunroom and the Hallway

The Sunroom

Unit Three is the only house that has a sunroom on the back. It's in pretty bad shape right now, but work will fix that.

Looking out from the kitchen.

It's quite dirty in there.

Looking from the back.

I'm not entirely sure what's going to happen in here, other than a nice thorough cleaning. I'm sure I'll find out more about what's happening as time goes on.

The Hallway

The hallway is a very small part of the house. It's actually not much of a hall, more like a square space leading to the other rooms, and soon one of the walls is going to be taken out so it's going to be more like part of the living room.

Looking into the hallway.

Looking into the living room from the hallway.

A few things need to be done in here, including:

  • Cleaning and painting of the walls.
  • General clean up.
  • New baseboard will go up.

Now all of the rooms in the house have been covered. From here on out I will be blogging about what I do each day that I work there, whether it be painting, cleaning, or taking out baseboards. Happy reading!

The Bedrooms

Master Bedroom

As mentioned before, Unit Three is a two bedroom house. The bedrooms aren't as bad as the rest of the house, though walls in there will need to be opened up to put insulation in, and new flooring needs to be installed.

Looking into the master bedroom from the hall.

From standing in the closet.

The closet.

Not too much is happening in here, more painting and cleaning as always.

  • Walls need to be painted.
  • Ceiling may be painted.
  • Carpet will be taken up and new flooring will be installed. Unsure of what type of flooring.
  • Baseboard heater may be replaced.
  • Baseboards need to go up.
  • General clean up will happen.

The Back Bedroom

The back bedroom is smaller than the master bedroom, and there is not quite as much work to do as in the master bedroom, but it's the same type of work.

Looking in from the hall.

The closet.

View from near the closet.

Everything we're doing in here is exactly the same as the master bedroom. The walls need to be insulated, and the floor needs re-doing. The same list as above applies to here. Two more pictures:

This is one of the baseboards pulled from the wall. It's rather ugly underneath.

I think there's a black light in there, though I really can't say.
